No one could really pinpoint where Eva came from or what she did beforehand, which is highly unlikely in the public relations industry.

Two rival publicists secretly hired private investigators to dig up the dirt on Eva. But after two months of exhaustive background checks and interviews, the private eyes found only three pieces of verifiable information: Eva received a graduate degree from The New School of Media; she mentored a young Black opera singer enrolled at the Harlem School of the Arts; and she landed a dream job at Weber. There were no salacious sex tapes or spurned ex-lovers; no college nemeses (most classmates didn’t even remember her); no criminal relatives, embarrassing past jobs or scandalous arrests.

Eva James was the woman from nowhere.

“Just how does a media professional live on this earth for 30 years and not get a single hit on Google?,” huffs one publicist to another. “She must be the devil!”

The other publicist laughs but abruptly stops. He takes an unusually long drag from his cigarette, and replies, “Well, if she is the devil, she has a hell of a future in PR.”
